Oct 23 2009 Substance Abuse Prevention

August 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This Friday night lecture is part of the UBC-O “Dean’s Series.” Of all the ones offered this autumn, this seemed perhaps of the most interest to our group. For one thing, it would certainly provoke thoughtful prayer for our community.

Oct. 23 Dr. Marvin Frank, Dean, Graduate Studies
Frank Marvin Photo Adolescence and Substance Abuse – Why Prevention Fails

Despite the best of intentions, prevention programs fail to protect many of our youth from the dangerous path ahead of them.  In this talk I will review some of the recent findings that explain why so many miss the point.  The answer lies in individual differences in personality, social context, current activities, and cognitive capacity.  The prevention approach that might work for one person would not work for another.  Individual differences in risk require targeted messages.  Classic universal prevention approaches inundate youth with too many messages many of which are not relevant and some of which are counterproductive.  Fortunately, new web technologies will allow us to ask, assess, and advise on an individual basis.

Evolution Series Jan-Feb 2009

January 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

New Life Church is hosting a series of seven lectures this winter. Our group has no affiliation with them. However, for the month of February, it might make a nice alternative (since our usual Wednesdays are cancelled this month).

The fifth lecture (Feb 9th) will be:

Complexity and Design

Increases in functional complexity of organisms needed for the theory of
evolution to be true is shown to violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
The concept of “irreducible complexity” is examined in detail with
examples from structures in unicellular organisms. Incredible design
features from various animals are presented to illustrate the necessity
for an intelligent designer.

Address:

New Life Church
“The Fridge” (Outside access on West side of building)
2041 Harvey Avenue
Kelowna, B.C.

No charge for admission. (Opportunity will be made for a donation.)

Aug 29: INTELLIGENT DESIGN. Lecture by Frank Sherwin

August 22, 2008 · 4 Comments

SCIENTIFIC CASE FOR INTELLIGENT DESIGN. Lecture by Frank Sherwin,
science editor at the Institute for Creation Research (www.icr.org).

This lecture will discuss the issues raised in the recent documentary film, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (www.expelledthemovie.com)

Date: Friday, Aug. 29
Place: New Life Church, 2041 Harvey Ave, “Oak Room”.
Time: 7 p.m.

Suggested donation: $5.00

Scientific discoveries continue to erode Darwinism, says zoologist

From August 24- 31 Frank Sherwin, Science Editor at the Institute for Creation Research (Dallas, Texas), will be lecturing in four Okanagan communities. He is the author of “The Ocean Book” (2004) and co-author
of “The Human Body: An Intelligent Design” (2001).

Sherwin has a B.A. in Biology from Western State College in Colorado (1978 ) and an M.A. in Zoology from the University of Northern Colorado (1985). He discovered a new species of parasite, a nematode of the family Acuariidae, and published his research in the Journal of Parasitology with the late Dr. G. D. Schmidt. Before his appointment to the Institute for Creation Research (www.icr.org) Sherwin taught Human Physiology & Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, General Biology I & II and Cell Biology for 9 years at Pensacola Christian College. He is a member of the American Society of Parasitologists and the Helminthological Society of Washington.

Sherwin says one of the more spectacular discoveries that has done much to dispel the myth of dinosaurs living many millions of years ago is the unearthing of soft dinosaur tissue by Mary H. Schweitzer of North
Carolina State University; Schweitzer discovered flexible blood vessels inside the fossilized thighbone of a “68-70 million year old” Tyrannosaurus rex in eastern Montana. (Science, vol. 307, no. 5717, pp. 1952-1955, 25 March 2005.) Sherwin asks, “How could dinosaur tissue remain soft for 70 million years?”

Sherwin writes in his July 2008 article, “Tiny Bacteria’s Big Challenge to Darwin” (Acts & Facts magazine): “Secular scientists have no credible idea how the DNA molecule may have evolved from non-life–especially without the aid of proteins (which must be coded by DNA) or the critical DNA repair system.”

Web articles by Sherwin include:

“The Devastating Issue of Dinosaur Tissue” (www.icr.org/article/2033/), “Stalling over Transitional Forms”
(www.icr.org/article/3148/), “Scientific Discoveries Continue to Erode Darwinism” (www.icr.org/article/3191/), and “Optimism in Evolution?” (www.icr.org/article/4031/)

Summerland: On Saturday, Aug. 30 he will be giving two lectures at
Summerland Pentecostal Church (9918 Julia Street): “Dinosaurs and the
Flood” (9:30 a.m.) and “Wonders of the Human Body” (11:00 a.m.) which
will discuss the body’s 11 interacting systems.

Evening lectures by Frank Sherwin at the Faith Mission Centre (4690
Hoath Road, Falkland, BC.)
7:00 p.m. $5.00 per person per lecture.
Sunday, August 24: Scientific Evidence for Creation/Design in Nature
Monday, August 25: Wonders of the Human Body
Tuesday, August 26: Evolution is Against the Law
Wednesday, August 27: Mount St. Helens
Thursday, August 28: The Mighty, Wonderful Oceans

The tour is being sponsored by the Creation Science Association of British Columbia (www.creationbc.org)

Aug 27 ‘Field trip:’ Space telescopes and lunar eclipse

August 13, 2007 · 1 Comment

Anybody want to go to Naramata Aug 27?? Might be a cool outing if anyone’s not too worried about work the next morning.

I think we will attend this lecture and therefore cancel our regularly scheduled meeting on that Wednesday (Aug 29th). The giraffes reading will hold over into September, instead.

Space Lecture

by Contributed – Story: 32602
August 12, 2007 / 7:30 am

A guest speaker will be in the South Okanagan later this month to talk about stars with interested residents.

Doctor Edward Churchwell of the University of Wisconsin, will be in Naramata on August 27 to host a lecture on the Milky Way.

New images from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope will be shown.

After Dr. Churchwell, Penticton’s own Dr. Ken Tapping, well known astronomer from the White Lake Observatory, will give details of the eclipse of the Moon that will be visible from the Okanagan in the early hours of the next morning.

The lecture takes place at the Columbia Hall in the Naramata Centre and runs from 7:30 until 9 p.m. This is a free public event.

The White Lake Observatory information is at:http://www.drao-ofr.hia-iha.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/outreach/outreach.htm and also their open house in Septemberhttp://www.drao-ofr.hia-iha.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/outreach/openhouse/welcome.htm

Seems interesting. If we all showed up, they’d no doubt be surprised ;-)

A lecture on BeThinking about the origins of the Universe is here (audio or text available):
Beyond the Big Bang by W.L. Craig http://www.bethinking.org/resource.php?ID=51

Also one by Hugh Ross on Astrophysics, too. http://www.bethinking.org/resource.php?ID=276&TopicID=2&CategoryID=1

Either one would be a good bit of reading before the 27th.
