2009 Creation vs Evolution Muncaster video

November 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On November 4 and Dec 2, we will be watching a DVD by Ralph Muncaster, “Creation vs. Evolution.”

Many of the brief segments of this video are available on YouTube if you are interested in watching them. The group had a lively discussion, as we don’t necessarily agree with this video on all details, but found many of the facts presented extremely helpful and interesting.

The December meeting will include the “Appendices” which are more technical and in-depth.

2009 Nov 18 : Neandertals

November 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

For the meeting on November 18, we’ll be reading a short article from the Journal of Creation.

The article is only a page long (although it prints out onto 2 pages). It is available on the Web, “The FOXP2 gene supports Neandertals being fully human“  and also as a PDF of the original publication which might print out better.

Feel free to bring other perspectives you might have on humanoid fossils and “early” human civilizations for discussion.

Evolution Series Jan-Feb 2009

January 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

New Life Church is hosting a series of seven lectures this winter. Our group has no affiliation with them. However, for the month of February, it might make a nice alternative (since our usual Wednesdays are cancelled this month).

The fifth lecture (Feb 9th) will be:

Complexity and Design

Increases in functional complexity of organisms needed for the theory of
evolution to be true is shown to violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
The concept of “irreducible complexity” is examined in detail with
examples from structures in unicellular organisms. Incredible design
features from various animals are presented to illustrate the necessity
for an intelligent designer.

Address:

New Life Church
“The Fridge” (Outside access on West side of building)
2041 Harvey Avenue
Kelowna, B.C.

No charge for admission. (Opportunity will be made for a donation.)

14 Jan 2009: Cladograms article

January 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I am looking through the Journal of Creation (formerly TJ: Technical Journal) for an article to read as a group.

Christabelle & I would like to have a discussion about this:

Mammal-like reptiles:major trait reversals and discontinuities, by John Woodmorappe.

http://creationontheweb.com/images/pdfs/tj/j15_1/j15_1_44-52.pdf

This article examines the evidence for a fossil-based line of descent from reptiles to mammals, analyzing whether the observed differences support the evolutionary case or otherwise. Although it is technical, detailed, and specific, the author frequently summarizes his findings in clear language. Those of us who are not trained in biology should still be able to follow along, maybe with the help of a highlighter!

There are lots of other good articles in this journal, but it is not indexed, so searching is a little taxing. Haha.  Let’s pick another one for the next meeting, too, on Jan 28th.

Nov 5 : Science and Genesis

October 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

On Nov 5th, we’ll meet at our place again to listen to this lecture from the BeThinking website:

http://www.bethinking.org/science-christianity/advanced/scientific-perspectives-on-genesis-1-3.htm

In addition to having a lot of great content and thought-provoking ideas, Loen & I were interested in the diverse approaches of the three presenters. Simply listening to the three should inspire us all about how to present our thoughts and beliefs.

Note that this is about an hour and a half long, so we’ll want to start right away.

Oct 22 : Age of the Earth

October 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

A popular creationist lecturer, Kent Hovind, has a video series, downloadable from his website. At this meeting we will take a look at the first one in the series, on the Age of the earth.

The download series is listed on his website:  http://www.drdino.com/downloads.php

We will meet at Troy & Jody Wielgosz’ home, which is still in Rutland, just up the hill from our place. If you are not sure where we are, give someone a call or email us and I can give you directions. We will meet around 7 pm, video to start PROMPTLY at 7:30, as some in the group may need to leave on time, too.

Depending on the group discussion following the movie, we will decide whether to watch all or most of this series for the rest of the fall / winter. So, if you have ideas on that, please attend tonight.

Sept 24 – Six Days of Creation

September 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

Wed 24th Sept, 2008, we will be at Troy & Jody’s place,  watching this video:

http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/product/Six-Days-of-Creation-The,4773,229.aspx

Titled, The Six Days of Creation: A Young Earth is Not the Issue, by Ken Ham, this “layman” level video discusses the age of the earth. Also includes a Silly Song, but not (alas) by Larry.

No homework in advance of this meeting, but come prepared to take notes during the video to discuss both the content, the strategy, and the presentation.

Remember, this is not at our usual location. Contact someone from the group if you aren’t sure where we are meeting.

Sept 10 : Questions About Design

August 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Questions About Design is ch.10 in Michael Behe’s book, Darwin’s Black Box.

Topics in this chapter include a review of the history of design ideas, including Greek thought, Paley, Dawkins, Hume, and others. Behe responds to current and media criticism of the “argument from design” for the existence of God. Discussions include genetics and morphology, as well as philosophy. 22 pages.

A copy will be available to pick up in the KCC office.

NOTE about this week’s meeting.

Krista & Loen will have just returned from holidays, so we don’t feel like cooking for you lot. Please bring some munchie you want to share. Nothing fancy required, chips or cookies or some veggies & dip is totally great. In case Troy decides to join us, no nuts please.  Going pot-luck means we can meet twice in September!

Unlocking the Mystery of Life

July 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In our June meeting, I found out about this video:

Unlocking the mystery of life [videorecording] / produced by Illustra Media.
[S.l.] : Illustra Media, c2002.
Subjects DNA — DVD-Video discs

Intelligent design (Teleology) — DVD-Video discs
Description:
1 videodisc (ca. 65 min.) : sd., col. ; 4 3/4 in.

I’m putting it on hold from the public library and we’ll all watch it together ~ date to be discussed. Our original plan was July, but maybe we shall consider August? Or saving it for a busy week once school starts again in the fall.

Plot Twist!

The movie on Intelligent Design, ‘Expelled‘ will be playing in Kelowna this week. If the group agrees, I think we should have a field trip on Wednesday! Showtime 7 pm, at the Grand10.

Slight change from our previous plan, but it’s still an ID movie!
