This Friday night lecture is part of the UBC-O “Dean’s Series.” Of all the ones offered this autumn, this seemed perhaps of the most interest to our group. For one thing, it would certainly provoke thoughtful prayer for our community.

Adolescence and Substance Abuse – Why Prevention Fails
Despite the best of intentions, prevention programs fail to protect many of our youth from the dangerous path ahead of them. In this talk I will review some of the recent findings that explain why so many miss the point. The answer lies in individual differences in personality, social context, current activities, and cognitive capacity. The prevention approach that might work for one person would not work for another. Individual differences in risk require targeted messages. Classic universal prevention approaches inundate youth with too many messages many of which are not relevant and some of which are counterproductive. Fortunately, new web technologies will allow us to ask, assess, and advise on an individual basis. |

We will finally get to discuss:
“The Wellness Gospel and the Future of Faith” by R.W. Dworkin.
http://www.hoover.org/publications/policyreview/3460706.html
While reading, look for both statements you like, and also for one or two points you disagree with. Also, how about proposing at least one scripture relevant to this reading.
Is it possible that those who are seeking healing, might make an invalid pursuit of religion in the absence of faith or sincerity? What about the role of a “wellness gospel” within Christianity, and how it changes the definition of our faith?
What is religion, and what does it mean for a person to be “spiritual?” Is Dworkin belittling all religious people as gullible? Is he saying we have no meaningful impact on science and society? I think we need to discuss what his biases are, and is he for or against Christianity (religion) ?
If you have trouble accessing the full text online, please contact me or stop by the KCC Office. We will be discussing this article on WED JULY 11.

On the 27th, Robin came and told us a great testimony about what happened after she was prayed for on Sunday June 24th. It was an amazing story, because after literally years of battling in her health on so many levels, she has been truly free this week as never before. This freedom is demonstrated in her lack of fear, in the scan of her back taken at the chiropractor’s office, in the clear CT scan at the hospital this week, and that she has been able to eat food she hasn’t eaten in years.
We had a good time discussing all this, and that our interest in evidence and reality doesn’t mean that we don’t believe God is real, or that we don’t believe the supernatural. Robin’s experience is a great example of our supernatural God and His glory shown by His work in our lives!
