2011 Creation Viewpoint talks

Greg Rutherford will be presenting a series of lectures on Creation Viewpoints, beginning Oct 24 and running for 6 Monday nights. Lectures are from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, followed by a question period, at New Life Church.

The church address is 2041 Harvey Avenue, Kelowna. Look for the sign “The Fridge” on the west parking lot (towards the back of the building, on the bakery side). Please access through the doors below the sign and not the main church entry.

We plan on attending the lectures and then possibly going for coffee with any of “our group” who would like to discuss more.

The tentative lecture line-up will be as follows:

1. The Genesis Narrative – October 24th – This introductory session deals with how evolutionary dogma has permeated our Churches and society. Questions of relevancy for Christians regarding the creation/evolution debate are examined.

2. Interpretation of Evidence – October 31st – This seminar looks at how preconceptions and biases can influence the way in which scientific evidence is interpreted.

3. Creation/Evolution Models - November 7th – The creation and evolution models of biological origins are compared and contrasted. The so called evolutionary “Tree of Life” is critiqued showing the impossibility of life originating by chance to the complete lack of evidence for indisputable transitional forms. The creation model is demonstrated to be superior in interpreting the known scientific facts.

4. Dr. Emil Silvestru Lecture – November 14th – UBCO campus – Emil works full-time for Creation Ministries International (www.creation.com) as a researcher, writer and speaker. More details to follow.

5. The Genesis Flood (Part I) – November 21st – In the book of Genesis the Bible described an event which was pivotal in human history. A catastrophic flood covered the whole earth destroying all surface dwelling animals, only those humans and animals on the Ark survived. This presentation looks at commonly asked questions about Noah’s flood. Examples include: was it possible the flood was only local, how did Noah fit all the animals in the Ark? The lecture concludes with a look at the geology of the flood event.

6. The Genesis Flood (Part II) – November 28th – Various geologic evidences for a global flood are presented. The results of this catastrophic event are examined in detail. There will also be a brief look at the Ice Age and Grand Canyon formation.

This is a discussion, more than a debate, between two Christians who disagree on the age of the Earth. They touch on a number of interesting topics. It’s really interesting to hear their different approaches.

The radio show is about 40 min long, and we may listen to it again at our meeting. I suggest you all listen to it in advance, so that you have some ideas to discuss.

At our recent meeting, Lin raised a great topic:

How do “old earth” creationists describe the Flood?

The question is, for those Christians who believe in the Bible and also accept the secular dating of an “old” earth and universe, what is their position on the flood described in Genesis, commonly known as Noah’s Flood, the one with the Ark?

I thought that was a great question, because I was in the middle of a chapter in a book by Hugh Ross which had raised some definite questions for me.

So, I found a couple of articles on his website, Reasons to Believe, which cover some of the basics:

2010 May 5: Craig vs Shook at UBC

On William Lane Craig’s website, Reasonable Faith, in the Audio-visuals section, is the video of a debate:

“Does God Exist” Craig vs. Shook, Univ. of British Columbia, Canada, 2008

The site required registration to access some content. No worries, we will all watch this video together at our meeting on May 5.

I’ve actually been surprised, watching some of Craig’s recent material, at the tone he takes towards some Christian and creationist viewpoints. He almost seems to go out of his way to side with the “secular” academics against those who interpret the evidence in a more Biblically traditional framework.

I haven’t watched this particular debate yet, but it is fairly recent and I will be interested to hear our discussion around the room. I expect to agree and to disagree, in other words, to have to exercise some discernment and thought.

Jeff had heard that the audience was particularly hostile or aggressive for this debate (how unusual in Canada!).

We’ll gather at 7 pm as usual, and try to get the movie(s) rolling by 7:30.

Dr. Faulkner has been on the faculty of the University of South Carolina since 1986. His research interests include stellar astronomy, especially binary stars. He has been published in the Astronomical Journal, Astrophysical Journal, the Publication of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the Information Bulletin on Variable Stars.

This journal article touches on the type of evidences we can consider reliable. Traditionally, the Bible has been considered an “eyewitness” account of events. However, in modern (popular) culture, “forensic” evidences are thought to trump eyewitnesses. Does this affect our faith?

Discussion on this reading is scheduled for Apr 21, 2010 at Troy & Jody’s place.
